Misfired Token of Hope

£1,000.00

Statue of baby Jesus, clay, lottery tickets, acrylic paint

60 x 35 x 100cm

2018

This piece was created based on pondering the question, “What is hope in this world?”. It was inspired by "The Happy Prince" by Oscar Wilde and proverbs in the Bible. During my full-time work in the fashion industry, my colleagues and I collectively played the lottery for years, and I kept those used lottery tickets. The result was that we had only £2.50 in total winnings. One of my colleagues had a serious obsession and spent hundreds of pounds every month on tickets while struggling to pay her daily bills. There are many options as to where we can place our hopes. Money certainly helps, but is it the real hope?
